How ranking works

The For you list (sort: Recommended) is ordered by four factors. Here is each one, with its weight.

The four factors

  1. Fit to your resume and search

    55% of the order

Your fit score for the job, out of 100. When a full fit analysis isn't available yet, a quick estimate on the same scale is used. A job whose quick estimate has too little to go on is left out when you filter for Good fits and better or Great fits only. While we are still comparing quick estimates with full analyses, a job with a full analysis is placed halfway between its quick estimate and its analysed score, so its place in the list can differ from the number on its card.

  2. Freshness

    20% of the order

Newer posts come first. The effect is strongest in the first two days and keeps a smaller weight for about two weeks. A post that is no longer listed by its source counts as older.

  3. What you've shown interest in

    15% of the order

Jobs like the ones you saved or opened move up; jobs like the ones you hid move down. Older actions count for less.

  4. Listing source

    10% of the order

Sources whose posts are usually complete and current count slightly more.

More rules

Each job gets a ranking score out of 100 from the four factors. The rules and goals below add points to that score, take points away, or move jobs within the list.

  • Visa sponsorship first

If you said you need visa sponsorship, jobs whose post mentions sponsorship come first, in the order you chose, and jobs whose post says it does not sponsor are hidden. This applies under every sort.

  • Your chosen skills

    Up to 10 points

When skills are the only filter narrowing your list, jobs that ask for more of your chosen skills rank higher in Recommended, in proportion to how many of them the job asks for.

  • Titles you marked as wrong

If you mark a job as "Not interested: wrong title", the weight of that role and the weight of that title each go down by 0.25, on a scale that runs from -1 to 1. "What you've shown interest in" is the average of a job's role, company and skills weights, and of its title weight when that is below zero. So one mark lowers other jobs with the same role or title a little, and each further mark lowers them more. The effect fades by 2% a day. Your filters stay as they are.

  • Jobs you keep passing over

    Up to 10 points lower

A job that was in your list on three or more visits and that you never opened ranks lower: 5 points after three visits, 7.5 after four, and 10 from five on.

Your goal

The career goal you chose when you set up your account adds points to jobs that match it.

A more senior role: jobs above the lowest level you selected+6 points
Managing people: jobs that manage people+6 points
Higher pay: jobs that list pay above your minimum, in the same currency+6 points
More flexibility: remote or hybrid jobs+4 points

Other goals do not change the order.

Variety

No more than 2 jobs from the same company in any 20 in a row.

When a company posts the same role in several cities, you see one card that lists the other locations, up to 10. Any further locations appear as another card.

What ranking never uses

  • Payment from employers. No one can pay to move a job up.
  • Whether a job was posted by a recruiter. That is a filter only.
  • Jobs flagged as possible scams are taken out of the list until they're reviewed.
  • Your photo, age, gender or family details.
